BIO

Paintings, Prints, Works on Paper and Ceramics
Holly Hughes was born in San Antonio, Texas. Hughes works in studios both on NYC’s Lower East Side and in Columbia County, NY.  She is a Professor Emerita at Rhode Island School of Design, where she taught graduate and undergraduate students and has been a frequent critic and lecturer at many national and international schools  and institutions.

Her resume details many solo and group shows in New York:  Dru Arstark Gallery, David Beitzel Gallery, Piezo Electric, Philippe Briet Gallery, Graham Modern, One Penn Plaza, P.S. 1 Museum of Contemporary Art, Anita Shapolsky Gallery, The Work Space, A. I. R., etc. Outside New York Hughes has been represented in exhibits in Germany, People’s Republic of China, Finland and France as well as across the US including Rhode Island, Tennessee, California, Indiana, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Connecticut, Maine and Maryland. Hughes’ work has been reviewed in ARTnews, Art Forum, Art in America, The New York Times, D’Ars (Milan), Drawing, Art New England and other publications.

Holly Hughes has traveled extensively, living in France and learning French. Focusing on her serious interest in Asian art, she attended one of China’s major art schools - the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou - where she studied traditional ink painting of the landscape and calligraphy. She has worked in ceramic factories in France, Mexico and Italy. Travels to many nations have facilitated her study of decorative arts collections, which strongly influence her current work.

Some of the collections including her paintings and prints are: Citibank, Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley, the Museum of the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI, The Kemper Museum, Kansas City, MO, Prudential Bache, Atlantic Richfield Corporation, Fred Alger Management Company, Bartlett Schlumberger & Company, The Freedman Gallery of Albright College, Pepsico,  Benziger Winery Imagery Collection, the Francis Greenburger Art OMI Collection, Pfizer Collection.
